How Creativity Brings Connection to 55 Plus Communities

At independent living communities like Villas at Stoney Point, life is shaped by meaningful connection and a calendar full of opportunities to engage, learn, celebrate and build friendships.

At Villas at Stoney Point, every month offers a wide range of ways to participate—from classes in the fitness studio and indoor heated pool to creative workshops, educational programs and themed celebrations. And while each calendar looks different, one thing remains constant: the purpose behind every activity.

“Events and activities are very important in 55+ communities because they support residents emotionally, physically and mentally while improving overall quality of life,” says Beth, Villas at Stoney Point’s activities director.

Activities and events foster a sense of belonging and help build friendships, which address loneliness.

“Loneliness is not just an emotional experience; it can influence whole-body health and independence, which is why social connection and community engagement are so valuable,” Beth says. “Connection is the opposite of loneliness, and connection is my purpose in all that I do.”

That philosophy is a big part of why Villas at Stoney Point is home to some of the best senior living Cedar Rapids has to offer.

How Monthly Programming Comes to Life

Beth’s planning process begins with inspiration. She starts by printing the national and international daily observances and holidays.

“I will focus on the observances and holidays that I know the community will enjoy and turn many of them into an event or activity,” Beth says.

This thoughtful approach ensures the community calendar always feels fresh, relevant and reflective of the residents who call Villas at Stoney Point home.

A Real-World Example: February’s Full and Festive Calendar

To see that philosophy in action, look no further than a recent February, where the community hosted more than 160 activities. And it wasn’t even a Leap Year! While every month is thoughtfully programmed, this particular calendar perfectly illustrates the level of energy, variety and engagement residents enjoy year‑round.

Two standout events showcase how special programming becomes at the Villas.

Galentine’s Day: Celebrating Friendship and Fun

Rather than focusing only on Valentine’s Day, Beth and the ladies in the community celebrated Galentine’s Day two days before.

When Beth saw Galentine’s Day on the calendar, she started brainstorming and thought an event featuring wine, chocolate fondue and a photo shoot would be exciting, engaging and well attended.

She was right! More than 20 women attended.

From the opening Galentine’s toast to the closing group photos—with chocolate fondue, smiles, laughs and more photos in between—fun was had by all.

Events like this create a warm, joyful atmosphere that helps new friendships form; one of the most valuable benefits of living in senior communities centered on well-being and social engagement.

Fat Tuesday: A Beloved Annual Tradition

Cedar Rapids is a long way from New Orleans, but that doesn’t stop this senior living community from celebrating Mardi Gras.

It starts with their Mardi Gras mask-making event in the community’s art room and culminates on Fat Tuesday.

“One of our very own Villas residents cooks the best shrimp gumbo and it was enjoyed by all,” Beth says.

Residents play table Mardi Gras trivia, coin toss, bead toss and, of course, vote on their favorite masks. In the past, they have even crowned a Mardi Gras king and queen.

2026 marked the third year for this popular celebration that combines food with hands-on fun.

Between the homemade gumbo, masks, trivia and games, it’s easy to see why residents feel such pride and connection within this community.

Why Activities Matter in Senior Living

In 55+ active communities, the quality of daily life is often shaped by the availability of meaningful activities. Villas at Stoney Point’s events are designed to bring residents together, strengthen emotional well-being, encourage movement and foster friendships.

And the best events aren’t just thrown together willy-nilly, and the results aren’t willy-nilly, either.

“I spend time researching and always keep in mind to focus on fun, food and engaging activities, and in return, the events are well received and attended,” Beth says.

Here, residents don’t just fill their days—they enrich them.

Beth sums up the community’s spirit beautifully:

“As our Villas T-shirts state: ‘Live a good life.’”
